X works for root, hangs for users

I am pretty sure this might have something to do permissions but I'm not too sure how to fix it. Basically I can start up X fine as the root user, but when I do this as a normal user, I get a black screen with a bash console in the top left hand corner, and that's as far as I get. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace shows that there are no errors and in /var/log/Xorg.0.log it shows that both users are loading the same file. Any ideas?

have the users done xwmconfig?

What you are seeing shows X is working fine even for users , just that the WM isn't starting correctly.

That did the trick, thanks!

Alright, kind of a long the sames lines but now my problem is with getting kdm to work as my login manager to load Xfce. I've installed the kdebase package that came on my slack 10.2 CD which includes kdm and I can see that it is installed in the correct spot. When I do 'init 4' as a super-user the screen flashes black, and then hangs and eventually returns to where i typed in 'init 4' and it acts as though it is running X but it doesn't draw anything to the screen, I still see the shell. My /etc/inittab seems to be right, can anyone shed some light on the subject? Thanks.
