X wont start after reboots and Chrome password everytime I open browser?

Ok I have 2 problems in my slackware 14.2 install
1) Everytime I reboot or shutdown when slackware loads back up to runlevel 3 login I issue "startx" and it tries to start but then drops me back to console. To get X to start I have to put in "xwmconfig", choose xfce then issue startx and everything is ok.
Any ideas why its doing this?

2) Damn Chrome asks me everytime I open it about some keyring password, how the hell do I get rid of that problem?

Thanks for any and all help!

no that is some key ring thing I don't know about, the other is usually no space left so x crashes.

I doubt space is the issue since startx can be run after running xwmconfig without deleting any files.

First thing I'd check is if there's any errors that are displayed when you run startx. The next thing to check would be your /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see if there's any errors there. Finally, check ~/.xsession-errors for any other errors.

With Chrome, my guess is you just need to disable KDE Wallet. You can do that using KDE's System Settings -> User Account -> KDE Wallet -> Uncheck "Enable the KDE wallet subsystem"

This is the fix that worked for me:

Quote:
First of all, we have to search for Passwords and Encryption Keys. Also you can open it from terminal:

Code:
seahorse
You have to go to Passwords Tab, and there you will se a folder: Passwords: login

Right Click and then Change Password. Enter your old password, and leave blank the new password fields.

Now you can try rebooting, it shouldn't appear now!

I suppose I must have had to build seahorse. But I remember this problem coming up and I solved it via this link [according to my notes].

Another way to get rid of the password prompt that worked for me is to add
Code:
--password-store=basic
to the execute command or to the execute line in your .desktop file, e.g.
Code:
chrome --password-store=basic

My understanding is that will store your Chrome saved passwords in cleartext. So if you're concerned that someone will boot your PC, open Chrome, and look at all your saved passwords in the settings, you may not want to do that.

come on linus there is two things that are going on ok.
open "pkgtool" select setup choose slackware installation scripts.
them select the window enviroment you want kde or xfce4 etc. make the link.
as for chrome asking for your gpg password yuou gave it one the first time you
used it.
google how not to use gpg for chrome.
and you had that option the first time you ran it.
you have your desktop to run everything that you left running when you log out or restart.
you have google chrome or chromium still running there are parts of it running look bottom right in kde defalt loaction.
top right xfce4 default set up.

close it or set your desktop environment to not run programs again left open.
up to you to learn your DE.
your a guru you should know this in slackware.
if not lets drink a beer.

I think the first thing to find out is what is the program actually asking for a password. Is it from Chrome? KDE? Gnome? Something else? Can you take a screenshot and post it?

As for startx, hopefully something will be in one of the logs that I mentioned above...

While Chrome, Chromium, and Opera all ask for password (at least in xfce and gnome-based DEs), Vivaldi doesn't. So if you don't have any particular reasons for using Chrome, this might be a 'solution'.

My Chrome doesn't ask for a password, so there's something that needs to be tweaked to prevent it for OP.

I've had this with Chromium-based browsers too - Vivaldi does it on Slackware but not on Ubuntu. So the password isn't getting stored somewhere.

EDIT: 'Slackware' is in Chrome's dictionary, good.
