X-Windows Shutdown Problem

I am experiencing a problem when I shut down KDE which has been reported elsewhere in the forums but no workaround has emerged:

When I close KDE, it leaves me with a black screen with big greeninh squares on it. It isn't really a freeze because in fact these squares are very large digits on the terminal screen. Pressing 'enter' moves them up the screen and although I cannot see what I have typed, I can still shutdown the PC and even go back into KDE.

I have read somewhere that it is something to do with 'rendering'. Is there a workaround involving some parameter in xorg.conf or some other file?.

Thanks.

Try getting rid of framebuffer mode - the high-resolution feature for a non-gui terminal.

In /etc/lilo.conf, there should be a vga=xxx line. Comment that line out and uncomment the line vga=normal. Save and run lilo to apply your changes. Reboot. The screen should be back to a low resolution but hopefully X will exit properly.
