X stays blank
 

Surely I'm overlooking something here...

I just installed Slackware 10 on my notebook, keeping pretty much all the defaults, except for the fact that I unchecked KDE (though I kept qt and the kdelibs). Anyway, the installation went smoothly, I selected gnome in xwmconfig, but now, when I run X, it just shows the default gray X background with the cursor.

/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc has exec gnome-session at the end and all .xinitrc's contain the same as the default. Running as root or as other users all have the same effect: nothing but the blank X screen.

Apart from "Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing from list!", I'm not seeing anything bad.

When I select blackbox, I get the exact same behavior.

I'm new to X.org so please don't shout. Thanks in advance.

Have you ran xorg.conf or something similar yet?

just to give the correct names...

xorgconfig and xorgsetup

are called the scripts..

in many cases just cp your old XF86Config to xorg.conf will work...

I had an xorg.conf which seemed to work okay with my monitor, since X *did* start. But that's all it did and does. It still seems to be ignoring the xinitrc. :\

now is another thing...

i am not expert... just some points..

are getting the GUI direct from reboot or you type "startx"???
maybe you need a ".xsession" file... This thing is a bit hard: .xsession or .xinitrc
you said that the installation was quite default... means that you kept gnome "stuff" ??

No, I didn't remove any gnome packages. Is there a difference between .xsession and .xinitrc? I seem to remember I always had exec gnome-session in .xinitrc, but it's been quite a while since I last used Linux.

Is there a way to test if it reads the .xinitrc at all? I put xterm in there and that didn't do anything either.

yep...

in fact .xsession and .xinitrc are not the same thing...
like i said before i am not expert... i heard once that one works when you call "startx" and the other works when you boot direct into the GUI... Maybe you need to check the initialisation scripts... maybe some guru can join us and clarify this point...
my suggestion is copy the .xinitrc to .xsession ...

make a test...

Actually, I just figured Slackware setup would configure everything for the DE I selected, i.e. Gnome. Can anyone tell me if I'm supposed to do anything after I install Slackware 10 with Gnome?
