Hi all, just did an slackpkg upgrade-all and x was upgraded in the process. I can startx as root but my default user account won't let it start. I'm attaching my Xorg.0.log output to this post. Would really appreciate any help.
EDIT!!!
Okay I got X to start as my default user by disabling compton at startup. However now I'm missing my icons and my theme has changed. Are there new locations for the newer x server as far as themes and icons go? Also, I can't seem to change my theme or icons at all from the xfce4 settings manager.

Reason: Changes to problem.
[ 97.649] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the GLX module; please check in your X
[ 97.649] (EE) NVIDIA(0): log file that the GLX module has been loaded in your X
[ 97.649] (EE) NVIDIA(0): server, and that the module is the NVIDIA GLX module. If
[ 97.649] (EE) NVIDIA(0): you continue to encounter problems, Please try
[ 97.649] (EE) NVIDIA(0): reinstalling the NVIDIA driver.
Did you reinstall the nvidia driver? The GLX module provided by the nvidia driver was overwritten by the xorg-server update.
Upgraded to latest nvidia driver without error. Still the same problem the theme won't change and I have missing icons and I can't change to a new icon set. If I log in as root everything is fine and my old theme and icon set is available? Very Weird.
Compton? You do not have a "normal" Slackware and have perhaps installed a GTK based alternative desktop environment? Chances are that some of the Slackware updates overwrote some other 3rd party package(s), not just the Nvidia OpenGL libraries.
OK. Your sig states that you are running "Slackware 14.1 x64 Multi-lib". How did X get upgraded then? Have you configured slackpkg for slackware64-current instead of slackware64-14.1 ? Or is it a postponed upgrade from an earlier release to 14.1?
The fact that root does not have issues with icons and your account does, would indicate something in your account's homedirectory (configuration files?) in need of a fix.
OK, so maybe unrelated, but I had X related problems after doing a slackpkg upgrade-all. For me it was google-earth and VirtualBox that caused X to crash and return me to KDM (KDE)login prompt.
My solution was to re-install nvidia driver via slackbuilds. I normally use sbopkg. YOU MUST follow instructions on the nvidia-driver slackbuild page. Particularly, pay attention to the need to use "nvidia-switch --remove". However, I found it needed further sanitisation: use "find /usr -name *-xorg" to find extra lib files that need restoring to original slackware state before re-installing nvidia-driver.
Anyway, after finally re-installing nvidia-driver sucessfully, this time on a more recent version, I'm all good (so far anyway). I used "COMPAT32="yes" ./nvidia-driver.SlackBuild" to make sure I got the 32bit support, probably required by google-earth. VirtualBox starts without crashing when I click on Settings for a VM now too!
However, google-earth still doesn't show photographs of landmarks etc whe I click on them. Oh Google, how we love you for doing what no-one else can. But just remember your roots, without Linux, you'd be a figment of Larry and Sergey's imagination!
