X problems again - DRI on Xpert98

Hi all - more headaches ! I'm trying to get X to run DRI with my ATI Xpert98 card. I run Slack 10.2, kernel 2.4.31, KDE 3.4.2 , X System 6.8.2. Apparently I need 2 tar files from http://dri.freedesktop.org/snapshots,
1) a common file and 2) a mach64 file. Thing is there a loads of these on the site and I'm not sure which build to download for my configuration . Any ideas anyone ?? (There doesn't seem to be a contact addy on the site or the DRI site to ask.)
TIA

Have you checked my thread on DRI (Link in my sig)? The Mach64 series of cards are already supported for ATI in the standard X setup. Just try
Code:
xorgsetup
Give it a shot. Sometimes, it works great. If no, read thru my thread. It does have an extensive ATI section, but yours doesn't need it (I believe).

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I originally ran xorgconfig to setup my hardware but DRI wasn't working so I changed xorg.conf to sort this out. This was the start of all my googling, editing, staying up too late cycle. Maybe DRI just won't work on my setup. Oh , I have read your thread - do I possibly have to rebuild my kernel to get DRI to work ?

Cheers

Maybe. But try the 'xorgsetup' instead of 'xorgconfig'. Sometimes, it just works...

Thanks for that - interestingly I just tried running a live CD of PCLinuxOS on my box and that runs DRI fine - could I hijack PCLinuxOS's xorg.conf and drivers or are Slackware's drivers specific to Slackware ?
Thanks again..

Not drivers, but the xorg.conf should work. Just put it in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Yeah - tried the xorg.conf saved from the live CD of PCLinuxOS - X worked but still no Direct Rendering. I still think this may be down to the wrong ATI driver or a kernel problem. Trouble is I can't find which is the right driver(s) to dload from the dri site. Also I really don't want to start rebuilding my kernel unless i have to (bit scared of doing more harm than good !!) I hate not being able to get to the bottom of a problem - thats one of the main reasons I am learning Linux and sacking XP !!
Getting desperate now...

Sounds like you may have to recompile your kernel. While it sounds like a big deal, it really is not.

Use this guide. I use it. It's a clear and very plain, easy to use guide.

Wow - a speedy response - nice one.. O.K. - I'm about to rebuild my kernel (gulp) ! Is this a very long process ( I haven't read your link yet) ?
