Well I would first suggest trying to enable VESA mode operation. There is a default X11 config provided. Just copy it to the XF86Config, then attempt to startx.
cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-vesa /etc/X11/XF86Config
If it still reports the same error message then I would suggest attempting to use the framebuffer device. Similar to the above, except it also requires vga=791 in the /etc/lilo.conf to be set for 1024x768x64k. Run lilo to write the new boot record and reboot. Then copy the default fb config file.
cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-fbdev /etc/X11/XF86Config
Then startx. I have had this to work when everything else fails to at least get X running even with LCD panels and notebooks.
Once you have a usable system and everything is stable, then you should look into the nVidia module drivers for better performance. Not sure here but I think that on 8 MB ram for video 1200x1024, true color is about the maximum that can be run. Lowering the color depth can increase the maximum desktop resolution.
