X lockups

I have noticed recently that I get occasional lockups in X. I can't even switch modes to get to the console or anything. However, the computer doesn't actually crash, as I can ssh into it and everything seams fine there. What really blows my mind is if I ssh into it and kill X I come back and the monitor is still displaying my last X screen. Anyone have a clue?

BTW, this is on Slackware 9 using NVidia Linux drivers.

Next time it happens have a look in your XFree86 error log.
