Just a guess, but the cat probably switched to another tty such as with ctl-alt-Fx, where X is a number...
You could probably have restored your original X/KDE session, and screen saver, with alt-F7.
Remember - the screen saver is NOT a security measure - it ONLY 'protects' the open desktop which it is running under...
Speaking of cats - When I shut down my laptop for the night I usually slip a cover my wife made for it over the display and keyboard and leave it open on a small table beside my 'work' recliner.
Several times lately I have gotten up the next morning to find it turned on. I thought my power switch/circuits must be failing at first, but then figured out it was my cat when I saw him stand on it, right front paw on the power switch beneath the slip cover, stretching to swat at the USB drive hanging just out of reach from the corner of a shelf... I moved the USB drive and my system stays off...
