x/kde running but stuck command prompt

hi, my cat sat on my laptop keyboard, kde screen saver was running and locked, i put her down and walked away

i later glanced at the laptop and it was at a sign in prompt in capital letters, xmms was still playing an internet radio station

i signed in as root then top, x/kde was running

i dont know keyboard combinations to get out of kde to a full screen konsole so i killed x/kde, logged out as root, then got back into x/kde

i thought you couldnt do anything if the screen saver was locked

this isnt a continuing problem as i keep the lid closed now, i'm just curious, what did the cat do?

THANKS!

Your description wasn't very clear to me but maybe your cat pressed Ctrl+Alt+F2 (or F3,..., F6) and got you to the console? In that case you can return to X with Ctrl+Alt+F7.

Just a guess, but the cat probably switched to another tty such as with ctl-alt-Fx, where X is a number...

You could probably have restored your original X/KDE session, and screen saver, with alt-F7.

Remember - the screen saver is NOT a security measure - it ONLY 'protects' the open desktop which it is running under...

Speaking of cats - When I shut down my laptop for the night I usually slip a cover my wife made for it over the display and keyboard and leave it open on a small table beside my 'work' recliner.

Several times lately I have gotten up the next morning to find it turned on. I thought my power switch/circuits must be failing at first, but then figured out it was my cat when I saw him stand on it, right front paw on the power switch beneath the slip cover, stretching to swat at the USB drive hanging just out of reach from the corner of a shelf... I moved the USB drive and my system stays off...
