X issues with Intel815 and Daytek 1436 Monitor

okay i installed slackware and upgraded the kernel to 2.6.5 (i cant get 2.6.6 working right) and tried 'startx' to my dismay it was using a virtual desktop size. (1024x768).
As anyone can understand i dont want to scroll around my already small CRT (14") in a 1024x768 environment so i ran 'xf86config' and done the usuall configuration. Chose the generic i810 driver etc and when it came to the resolution configuration i selected 640x480, 800x600 for the 3 depths (8,16,24) once that completed a ran startx again but still the same problem...

Anyone help me out?

Frist is your monitor capible of hanling the resolution you want to use? it your monitor only supports 640x480 then you can't go any higher.

During the last couple questions it asks what video settings do you want... starting at the editing of resolution and color depth. you might want to change this in your /etc/X11/XF86Config :

Code:
Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen 1"
    Device "nVidia GeForce FX 5200"
    Monitor "Dell M782 Color Montior"
    DefaultDepth 16

    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 8
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
EndSection

To this:

Code:
Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen 1"
    Device "nVidia GeForce FX 5200"
    Monitor "Dell M782 Color Montior"
    DefaultDepth 16

    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 8
        Modes "640x480"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Modes "640x480"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "640x480"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
EndSection

the Daytek DT-1436 is capable of 1024x768 (http://www.monitorworld.com/Monitors/daytek/dt1436.html)

i have tried changing the values and re-runing xf86config but it always uses 1024x768
