X Goes Dark After Clean Install of -current - Black Screen Only

I just finished a clean install of -current 64 Bit - after making a user account & logging in, I run startx - black - that's all I get.

I'm running an old 7500LE NVIDIA Card - X worked fine before the June 4th update.

I checked the Xorg.0.log and it's empty, so I have nothing to go on, no errors or log entries.

Thanks for any direction or ideas on what to look for.

First thing I try when that happens is to add

Code:
nomodeset
to the kernel line. So with LILO, you'd type at the boot: prompt →

Code:
Linux nomodeset
(assuming your Lilo entry is named `Linux`)

That seems to have solved the challenge. Is that because it's an older Graphics card? I don't want to have to enter that everytime I boot up - where do I put that in lilo.conf so it just happens automagically?

I just read the Changes and HINTS:

Quote:
Now that KMS (Kernel Mode Setting) for graphics cards has (mostly) stabilized,
it is enabled by default for intel, ati, and nvidia graphics chipsets. It
is possible to disable it use "nomodeset" as a kernel append in lilo.conf,
but Xorg will not work at all on intel and ati chips (and maybe others) if
you do that.

If you want to change the resolution of the KMS console, that can be done
with something like this as a kernel append in lilo.conf:
append="video=1024x768"

Speaking of lilo.conf and KMS, make sure you use either vga=normal or
vga=extended -- some of the framebuffers don't like KMS very much...
Sometimes I just have to look a little farther : )

Thanks!!!

I don't know why it happens, just how to fix it (apparently).

It's easy to add to LILO conf. Basically, you just add it as an 'append' line in the kernel block. Linux Docs explain it better:

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Remote-Ser...rnel-lilo.html

For example:

Code:
image=/boot/vmlinuz-3.14.15.blah
  label=linux
  read-only
  root=/dev/sda1
  append="nomodeset"
And then, of course, run lilo to update the config.

That's not where I put it : ) I merely edited the append line at the top of Lilo.conf - of course that may cause something else to go crazy : )
