X, FX 5200 and SW9.1

Hello,

Iīve already used Conectiva 9 and Mandrake 9.1 with no problems with X Windows Server, but now I installed Slackware 9.1, and i am in trouble...

When I boot the machine, I log in as root (as I didnīt create a user account yet) in text mode and type startx. The monitor is then turned of due to an error probably when trying to set the video mode.

Then, I got the newest drivers from nvidia and installed then according to their specifications. It canīt find a pre-compiled module for my machine, but it compiles one. Then, when I type startx, a message indicating that there were errors appear and X isnīt even started.

Can someone help me?

Sorry for asking a question that was already answered...

Everything I had to do was to run xfree86setup...

Thanks for the attention anyway!

@slacknoob ->
just one question: to which dir you directed the nvidia installer?
in my case installer does not find the precompiled module and tries to compile it but doesn't find some source it needs.
Any ideas?

slacknoob 10-10-2003 09:01 AM

In my case it doesnt find a suitable module also, so it tries to compile. For doing so, you must have gcc, (make also?), and of course the kernel source. Check if you have installed it, or just install the full version.

Thanks.

I have installed with the "full" option and picked every single group of packages (a,b,d,...).

I think the problem is that the installer does not include/provide the nvidia_kernel source/package.
I think i found the solution: http://www.minion.de/
i'll try it later and report...

BTW: I'm kindda new to slack and linux in general. Can someone tell me where does it store the kernel&modules sources?

For the other sources i think slack provides 2 additional CDs, right?

slacknoob 10-10-2003 09:27 AM

The kernel source is stored under /usr/src/linux[version.

I think there is a link (?) to it (a folder?) into /usr/src/linux
