X crashes when switching to console mode

When I switch to console (ctrl-atl-f1) the x server crashes with

(EE) I810(0): Invalid argument

If I try to switch back to X (alt-f7) I get a blank screen. Luckily I can still get back to console.

The end of my Xorg.0.log:
Code:
(EE) I810(0): Invalid argument
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such device)

Fatal server error:
EnterVT failed for screen 0

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
         at http://wiki.X.Org
 for help.
Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional informati
on.

Anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be?

Try to reconfigure your xserver.

As root type

Code:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Whats your current screenresolution/settings?

Are You using an Intel graphics card?

The problem only shows up on Slackware with DRI loaded. It seems that if I comment Load "DRI" in xorg.conf then I don't have this problem, but then I don't get hardware acceleration.

The dri thing doesn't cause any problems in Debian. Maybe because it uses XFree86 instead of Xorg? I don't really get the difference between Xorg and XFree86.

I think I'm using an Intel graphics card. X wouldn't even start otherwise, right?

screen resolution is 1280x1024 H:80.0 kHz V:75.0 Hz. It's an LCD screen if that matters...
