X Acceleration on ATI card & 2.6.16.17 kernel

Well, I've spent a whole bloody day trying to fix that X acceleration on my Slack 10.2 current , latest 2.6.16.17 kernel (it just came and I've already done at least 15 builds..) when I fix somthing , something else needs fixing..
I've read all the entire threads on this board regarding this subject, not to mention googling other boards and still getting headaches..
Thanks cwwilson,old_fogie,shilo and other people I was reading through their posts.

I'm confident enough to say that I've tried everything..

The most surprising bit is that at first this X acceleration thread was looking too much hassle to me and I've managed to get it running in less than 15 mins on my 2.4.32 kernel, then I've upgraded it to fix
other issus and it did the job nicely.

I've tried so many things that I can't even remember all of them, mostly tried to follow all the suggestions till the last page from the X accel. thread by cwillson721 on this board.

I would like to bring out to your attention some files and kindly ask for your opinion how to fix the bugger. Xorg.log.0 , xorg.conf, .config (my kernel conf) in that order, anything else just let me know

Many Thanks in advance
P.S. Please help me sleep tonight
Xorg.log.0

To be honest with you, I can install any version of ATI drivers on slack 10.2 with kernels all kernels from the stock one
to the 2.15 series. I can't get kernels in the 2.16 series to run right, but they do go in.

For slack current, I get xorg version errors after installing any drivers.

I truly believe that there is either a driver bug in ATI for the higher kernels, or quite simply the version
on the web was not tested on these newer kernels, or there is a bug in slack 10.2 and for slack current from
2 weeks ago, well it's beta so it's to be expected for a hitch to be there.

I can tell you that I put suse 10.2 gm in and the latest kerenels from ATI worked on that. So I'm starting
to think it's really a slack 10.2 and current issue for these drivers.

edit: but i was just testing suse, i run slack and look forward to slack 11
but i'm new to linux and old fart what do i know.

Worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you very much old_fogie !!!!!!

You're a an Xaccelator_GOD PAL!!!!!!!!

it worked straight after re-installing the ati driver on the 2.6.15 kernel !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So for all people trying with the current ATI Driver, in ordder to work use 2.6.15 kernel

It's also good to know that I've been doing something right.

Again thank you very much for the support on my threads pal. It is much appreciated.

I'm off to try with the 2.6.15.7 kernel

BTW my firewall script from www.projectfiles.com/firewall does not let me to access the internet on kernel <2.6.17(yep the one that came last night-bloody weird is this linux world if you ask me )

Thanks old_fogie!

Good to hear.

About your internet firewall issue. I got issues on newer kernels too.

I suspect, it is because they are implementing ipv6 hard and heavy into these
new kernels now more and more. Maybe? and I'm really only guessing here, no
tests, just outta my backside, maybe the slack net scripts might need some tweaking
to work with IPV6?

More info, fogie. Was it the kernel itself? Or the newest ATI drivers?

I'm using kernel 2.6.16.19 and the fglrx_6_8_0-8.25.18-1.i386.rpm which were the latest kernel and video drivers
available at the time possible.

I have full direct rendering. I'm getting 4400 FPS now in about a 6" diagonal window w/a resolution of 1200x900.

If you recall, I used to get around 3000 fps when I used Mepis and when I first started messing with DRI.

I have had two major video melt downs since installing this kernel & video combination.

But nothing was logged, and the pc just froze. CTRL+Alt+Backspace, CTRL+ALT+F6 or CTRL+ALT+DEL did nothing.

I suspect I still have issues from when my power supply started to go on fire. Remember I am highly
overclocked so my results are not typical.

I'm going to be tweak my kernel tho from the stock that Mr. V has that I'm running,
and put in temperature sensor stuff APM for my power button on my tower. Also looking to
strip out more stuff that I don't use in this kernel. Altho, I have to say
with this kernel and video setup, this pc has never been this fast in linux before, ever!

edit: Oh i think you were asking what was my success. Well, I think it was the fact that ATI just
issued these new drivers this month. The last set of drivers ATI had on the web, I could not use
any kernel above 2.6.10 in slackware using the method of installation that I sent to you before.

Now with these new ATI drivers I can use the installation method I previously submitted I can use
a later released kernel and get DRI.
