www.slackware.com
I always wondered why a very big distro like slackware has this very bad-looking webpage?
|
Looks great to me - what's wrong with it?
|
yeah, it does look straight out of 1996; but that's slack. Simple and it works.
|
Well, I'm sure there are those that think the website is very attractive.
Others will argue that they don't care what the website looks like, so long as everyone is busting butt to ensure that the software is as close to perfect as it can be. Finally, there are those that'll agree with you, at least partially, but less about the appearance than the relative, er, age of the documents that the website contains. I suspect you'd find me with one foot in the second group and one foot in the third. :) |
Perhaps Pat and company feel it's a higher priority to focus more on the distro and less on the website?
Besides, Slack isn't exactly a bells and whistles flashy distro, so why would the site be? |
I always thought that the Slackware website was a very good indicator of what Slackware is all about. Simple and straight forward, no getting lost in increasing menus and categories.
|
I love the slack website. It rules :P
|
well there are plenty of examples even further that way.. gnu.org, kernel.org etc...
|
I think it has it's own style (which you may not like), it's just Slackware simplicity and can be browsed very nicely in text mode :)
I took a look at different distros pages and I still think Slackware's one is a good looking page (and it doesn't have images). |
The Slack website is, by far, one of the most useful websites out there. It's about time somebody clued in to the fact that flash/bells/whistles detract from the surfing experience, not enhance it.
|
gbonvehi has a good point, sites like slackware.com gnu.org and kernel .org look good in text mode which i think is the point. if you run a server with no x environment on it you can still fire up lynx or what not and easily navigate the sites to get needed updates. some of the other distros may have a more eye catching layout but without starting up a graphical web browser there's no way of finding anything on it.

I don't find it visually attractive, but it works fine for me.

hi there,
the layout is ok. i just think some parts should be written again. an observation: in the "about" section of www.slackware.com you see the name of some guys that helped the project. if i remember correct one of them left the project in 2002. it means that the information in the website should be updated. some years untouched. regards slackie1000 |
