I dual boot Slackware 13 and windows XP. The only reason I ever use windows is because I'm unable to get counter strike 1.6 and vent working in linux as well as it runs in windows. Yesterday my dad went out and bought a new linksys dual band router and matching WUSB600N usb adapters. The only problem is linksys does not support linux. After reading a million how to's and a few failed attempts I'm at my wits end. The ndiswrapper approach failed because the drivers on the disk and the linksys website are unable to be extracted which most of the how tos say to go about it. I've read about Ralink rt2870 and I am not nearly skilled enough with linux to understand the install instructions. I just don't know how to correctly configure the make config. Any help would be deeply appreciated since I can't stand the thought of having to be stuck in windows permanently.
What kind of wireless were you using before? While it won't be as fast as 802.11n, you could still use that to connect under b/g. What does lsusb show for this device?
I was connected through Ethernet before, but my Dad doesn't want a 100 ft cable running through the house anymore, and I can't move the router into the basment so he bought these adapters since they have a far enough range. Yes when I lsusb it shows up named linksys.
Fair enough. You should be able to do it via ndiswrapper, there are several reports of success. They all seem to be distributed as .zip files with the needed files just inside -- what trouble are you having extracting the drivers?
There is no zip on the CD or available for download just exe. I read on there fourms that version 1 of this device worked automatically with an install of ubuntu (which I would never use over slackware). I have version 2 of the adapter maybe that's why none of the how to guides seem to apply to me. I've downloaded the Ralink RT28070 driver which is supposed to work on linux but I have no idea how to configure the install the readme in very vague and I am no linux guru. My windows has locked out today already I just wish I could get back on my slackware and enjoy the internet.
I assume you mean the RT2870 driver. (And the device would work on Ubuntu because they have packaged and ship this driver by default.) You'll want to get the kernel headers and the source package for the driver. You'll want to set "MODE=STA" and "TARGET=LINUX" in the Makefile, as well as the path to the kernel headers in LINUX_SRC. It also looks like you need to set 'HAS_WPA_SUPPLICANT=y' and 'HAS_NATIVE_WPA_SUPPLICANT_SUPPORT=y' in os/linux/config.mk. You should then be able to run "make" to build the driver.
(By the way, RALink produces some really bad documentation... it's not just you.)
