Slack is easy to install, although the installer isn't especially pretty, true, but I couldn't care less about that.
I really like Slack, both for how it is and what it is. It works better than any distro I have used in and if it stops being very good, I know it's because of something I've done. I like that.
If someone who writes a blog wants Slackware to make decisions for him, then he should use another distro. It's that simple.

Besides why turn Slackware into an ubuntu type, theres plenty of distros like that already, Slackware is a distro with the concept of simple clean design without all the excess GUI bloat. Besides if you used KDE in Slackware it already has lot of GUI stuff in it. If some people liked more GUI tools in their slack distro either they customize it themselves or they get a distro that caters as such.
I would prefer more CLI tools and ncurses based tools for slack definitely.
xmessage, gxmessage, dialog (ncurses), xdialog, gtkdialog are all desktop independent and can be slapped over shell scripts. Individual desktops have their 'zenitys' and 'kdialogs' or whatever. I'm sure there are many more. And what you're wanting could likely be done as a simple desktop icon, depending on what you use for such things (if anything). TCL/TK is probably overkill for what you're talking about and, while these things vary and people will probably be using TCL/TK decades from now, it seems to me it is a kind of fading language.
Heck. You could just create a launcher in your desktop and use "eject -T" as the command. That's it, you got a button that opens the CD tray when you click on it and if you click on it again it closes the tray.
