word processors don't `see' cyrillic fonts properly

Hi there,

I've got localization problems with AbiWord and KWord processors that ship
with Slackware 9.1:

1. Abiword does not list all installed fonts in Menu->Format->Font dialog box;
neither it does when I try to select them on Toolbar.
Thus I can not type Cyrillic letters, although cyrillic fonts ( Times[Cronyx] etc. )
are present and other X programs (Gimp for example) have no problems finding them.

2. KWord's font selection dialog (Menu->Format->Font) also brings up a very reduced list
of fonts. This is particularly strange because I can see a lot more fonts (including
Times[Cronyx]) in the drop-down menu on Toolbar.
Moreover, the Insert->Special Character dialog box shows cyrillic letters ok, but when I
actually insert a cyrillic character it becomes just an empty square.

Setting locale LC_ALL='ru_RU.KOI8-R' makes KDE show cyrillic letters everywhere
*except* where I need them -- in the document body, where it still shows empty squares.

I don't want to use MS TTF fonts, and never tried to install them.

Any ideas? Thanks

you should try this, there is koi8-r in it.
there is a little bug so you should add in your XF86Config in the section server flags
Option "HandleSpecialKeys" "always"
because without it you can't switch to consoles.
If you're using Abi 2.0 there wont be any problems

Hi Ipolit,

The package you mentioned is a collection of fonts and I don't want to add
more fonts. What is the use of adding fonts if programs can't use whatever
is there? I am happy with what fonts are already in the Slackware 9.1
distribution, I can use them ( Cyrillic koi8-r ) in xterm, gimp and others, but
somehow kword and abiword do not show symbols in documents, at the
same time happily showing menus in Russian correctly. And it seems that
they don't know about the existence of Times-Cronyx font when they bring up
a font selection dialog.
Here is the list of what AbiWord shows in font selection dialog:

Times New Roman
Bitstream Charter
Bitstream Vera Sans
Bitstream Vera Mono
Bitstream Vera Serif
Braille-HC
Courier
Courier 10 Pitch
Cursor
Luxi Mono
Luxi Sans
Luxi Serif
Utopia

Almost the same thing is with KWord.

Why are these fonts special, I can't figure out.
