WOO! First kernel compile!

HAHA! Just compiled 2.4.22 from source and followed the instructions from the thread at the top of this forum all the way! It worked like a charm!!

Thanks for the thread everyone, this forum rocks!

YAY!!! :D

Glad to hear you got it sorted out. Compiling the kernel can be a bit daunting at first but after you've done it a few times, you realise just how easy it is and how stupid you were to be scared by it :p

Anyway, did you get your AGPGART issues sorted out?

mcd 09-04-2003 03:27 AM

never did :(

i'm gonna crash now (it's 4:30 am) but i think they may have included support for my chipset in the 2.4.22 release...if i'm lucky. i'll try tomorrow and see if i can get it working. it's good of you to ask though, i appreciate that!

g'night all!

Congrats mcd.... I also just finished my first Kernel compile using the instructions from this forum and all went well, w/o a hitch. I felt so good about it I went and compiled the nvidia drivers for my video card and that also went w/o a problem after a little light reading.
I agree this forum is a lifesaver-------- thanks to all who help us newer users with a little handholding.

Good on you, guys.

Of course, you're not done. Now, you can keep re-config-ing to pare down the kernel size. Remove the hardware support for things you know you don't have, won't need. Everytime you slice away another listing, you make the kernel smaller and leaner and more efficient.

Just be sure you keep a copy of your original .config in case you mess a later one up. And, make a bootdisk, just in case.

Good luck.
