ping -c 4 google.com gets: unknown host google.com
ping -c 4 74.125.29.101 gets: Network is unreachable

After correcting [deleting all previous changes, including at wlan0] got connection firmly via wicd Network Manager to "CLP-Main Library" at IP: 10.50.13.187, but still couldn't get through to library"s click-on screen, and hence no internet [Firefox gives that "server not found"].

BTW, thanks for alerting me of existence of form holding option of "code /code"; never knew it was there.

some networks require you to register in some fashion or another, usually through a web interface
(it should replace any website you try visit with that register page)

does it work on a smartphone or other peoples laptops ?

Well, I suspected my problems with Slack were due to outside interference, and now has become obvious.
Today could not even get a screen to work with. Upon booting-up, screen scrolled normally until where should have been sign-in screen, but instead got message that there was an inconsistency with the root file system and should run fsck manually, BUT any use of keyboard automatically triggers re-boot and back to where started.
Previous day someone unplugged the power cord under desk using at library [not at laptop which would have seen] to drain my battery and, I suppose, to make clear am being sabotaged by outside hacker [almost certainly government affiliated, so switching libraries wouldn't make a difference].
No idea how can overcome this, but wish to thank all those who have put time and effort into helping me.

After various trials, I took laptop to new internet location and retried the boot process and was now able to get back to routine booting and sign-in, but still no internet.
Whether it was the efforts of administrators at library [had observed my problems and were troubled by it -- especially after showed had access to a library info screen, but still with internet blocked] or possibly those interfering were now embarrassed by their obvious excess, but this time when clicked on a 'history' link under firefox [something I had tried several times before] the internet suddenly was there [and has stayed there -- at least to date].
While available have updated everything and put in 'slackpack' and other useful apps.
Once again thanks to everyone for their time and assistance.

I use bassmadrigal way to connect find its the best way. Sometimes I use netctl wifi-menu -o command on other distributions besides slackware and that gets the job done. If you glance through the archwiki page they mention wpa_cli and that's also the tool that is necessary.
