The new wireless-tools version is 28, in fact. You don't tell what kernel you installed, but I guess it is a 2.6 kernel? Recent 2.6 kernels really should not be used with wireless-tools older than 28.
I have a Slackware package for the "28" version of wireless-tools at
http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slac...ireless-tools/ - the package is for Slackware 10.2 but it might just work on 10.1. You could also use the SlackBuild etc... stuff in the "build" subdirectory to compile your own package.
