Wireless card problem on Slack 10.2 with 2.6.17.1

Hi,

I'm trying to get my PCMCIA Orinoco Classic Gold NIC going. I'm running Slack 10.2 with 2.6.17.1 kernel. I've also installed pcmcia-cs.

When I insert my card, I get the following from /var/log/messages:

Code:
lappy kernel: pccard: PCMCIA card inserted into slot 0
lappy kernel: pcmcia: registering new device pcmcia0.0
lappy cardmgr[752]: socket 0: Lucent Technologies WaveLAN/IEEE Adapter
lappy cardmgr[752]: executing: 'modprobe orinoco_cs 2>&1'
lappy cardmgr[752]: + FATAL: Module orinoco_cs not found.
lappy cardmgr[752]: modprobe exited with status 1
I've configured my own kernel, and in the config there were no options / drivers for orinoco.

With all my other hardware, I've been lucky in that all the drivers have been included in the kernel.

I guess what I'm asking is, how do I load the drivers for this Orinoco card?

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Mark.

Look at this website for info for you:

I may be wrong, but isn't the Hermes chipset the option you need to enable?

Hiya,

I've had a good look around that site, and it is quite helpful. I've also had a look at Dave Gibson's driver page.

What I can't understand though (and what I'm probably missing) is that according to http://sourceforge.net/projects/orinoco, the orinoco_cs driver is meant to be included in the kernel since 2.4.3.

However, I'm running 2.6.17.1 and can't find it anywhere! :-(

Am I missing something really obvious?

Hi Hangdog42,

I think you could be right. I didn't enable this as it comes under ISA/PCI card support - and mine is a PCMCIA card.

However under closer inspection of the help section, it clearly does include PCMCIA cards.

I'll recompile and let you know how I get on.

Many thanks,

Mark.

I think it is still there, it is just called Hermes. If you activate the Hermes portion of the kernel, in a number of the driver descriptions you'll see this:

Quote:
Enable support for PCMCIA cards supported by the "Hermes" (aka
orinoco)
I'm taking that to mean that Hermes is the driver you want. In fact the section you want to activate is called Hermes Chipset 802.11 support (Orinoco/Prism2/Symbol).

You are correct. It is a part of the Hermes now.

I looked at the actual driver names in my kernel config, and there it is. I had the info turned off in xconfig because on this laptop, I already know what I need....

My bad...

Hiya,

Yep, it was in there and I checked it and recompiled.

However, I still get the error in /var/log/messages saying it can't find /lib/modules/2.6.17.1/pcmcia/orinoco_cs.o (which to be fair, isn't there).

There is a file called 'orinoco.ko' in /lib/modules/2.6.17.1/kernel/drivers/net/wireless.

Why doesn't the /lib/modules/2.6.17.1/pcmcia folder get created? Is it a simple workaround by creating it manually? Or is it something I'm not doing when configuring the kernel?

Any ideas?
