Try "touch ~/.wine".

If it does not work, try reading the Wine documentation, and see if there is "configure" mode or somesuch...

I think Wine is probably telling you that you don't have the file ~/.wine/config. The package from linuxpackages.net won't install this for you because it doesn't know which user you want to be able to run Wine. However, I think there is a sample config file installed to /usr/docs/Wine-****/ (not sure of the exact version number). After you create a .wine directory in your user directory, you can copy this sample config file there, then edit it for your system (it's fairly well commented).

I just finished doing a Wine install on my system. After trying unsuccessfully to install the Wine-20030709-i386-S9nodebug.tgz package, I gave up and d/l'ed the source. There's a script (./tools/wineinstall) that does an excellent job of guessing what your system needs and configuring it accordingly. Afterwards, you will want to finetune the ~/wine/config file. For my system, I had to edit the floppy and cdrom entries and I decided to change the tmp entry so that it would use my fake windows partition c:\windows\tmp.

Enjoy!
