Thanks T3slider and BugZRevengE.
I was able to follow the "about:config" method, and used the Mozilla string you suggested- the url you quoted is unavailable at present.
The result was "You do not have a suitable version of Javascript running successfully in your browser. This may be because you have an old browser, because of your security settings or possibly because it has been explicitly turned off. Because of this error we cannot continue running the test."
Then, again following your advice, I got user agent switcher on. I had a lucky guess backed up by a bit of research: a right click on the .xpi, install with >iceweasel did the job. As we speak my offending website is well & truly spoofed, without playing havoc with my processor- and busy checking for a non existent activeX control- so, back to what was said, there's the problem!
I will go for the Virtual Box option if I have to use this website frequently from home and without my work laptop, but that probably won't happen- so dual boot will be enough.
As ever, I've learned some useful tips on this thread, so I must thank you for your time, and for tolerating my "hijacking" of your wine discussion.
Regards-Phil

sonichedgehog, that's too bad. ActiveX is a nightmare even in Windows, so it looks like you're out of luck. But dual-booting isn't SO bad I guess...
