Now that I realized this is only in the 3rd I looked at the winehq page for that specific game and noticed in the comments someone who has encountered similar problems. Following their advice I found that installing devenum with winetricks now allows the videos to play. There is probably still an issue in wine given that an older build allows these videos to just work without devenum.

Do you get this when you try to play Xanadu Next?

I suspect it's an NVidia thing, and I'm wondering what you're experiences are since you have an AMD card.

I made that issue and first experienced it with nouveau, I still experience it with amd.

As explained in the later comments it can be worked around by using d3d8to9 and then installing native versions of d3dx9_43 and d3dcompiler_43 with winetricks. The d3d8.dll from d3d8to9 can be placed in the same directory as the game executable and then used by setting WINEDLLOVERRIDES.

Code:
export WINEDLLOVERRIDES='d3d8=n'

It looks like wine-4.12 has issues to watch out for.

It's looking like mingw is going to be needed going forward? Has anyone tried building WINE with it?

I tried to work on a mingw slackbuild, but I found the temporary packages that needed to be installed and removed to be quite discouraging and was not able to work around that... However I don't think that will help, from the issue report.

No, I have mingw-w64 enabled builds on Linux since the support of cross-compiling Wine builtins as PE was added to the build system. I have a couple of bugs that are hopefully solved when the process is finished.

Looks like they released 4.12.1 that allegedly fixes those issues? I haven't tried it, and can't vouch for it.
