hi i have two computers linked together through identical ethernet cards,
one is running XP the other slackware 9.1.

XP shows there is a connection and that the two cards are exchanging packets

i can ping my linux box from the XP one but not vice versa;

Hi fitteschleiker,

Did you check that windows xp "pseudo-firewall" is disabled ? I think it's a checkbox in connection properties that says something like "keep my box secure bla bla bla".

You should get there clicking right button on connection and select properties.

Bye

Fully updated XP boxes now drop icmp packets and hide their netbios names, makes finding out who is abusing my wan very difficult.
