Windows Xp, Slackware Internet Connection Sharing.
 

K i have both of my computers connected, the windows xp connects to the internet, and my slack computer connects through it. Im not exactly sure how to set up ICS for either computer, could some one please help me out? Thanks alot in advance.

maybe you should install and configure Samba

You don't need samba for ICS, what you need if you want to set your linux box as a gateway is "firestarter"

Heres how its set up:

Internet > Windows Xp Box << (Linux box connects to windows with a cable)

i still have no idea if im doing this right. Ive been searching the net for answers, and i found a document that said i needed two ethernet cards, an ethernet cable, and an internet connection. I installed my second ethernet card, and connected both computers. Now that might be wrong, but if it isnt i still dont know how to configure windows. Or Linux.

ok, if you already have your xp box connectes to the internet and it has 2 ethernet cards, do the following:

One ethernet is connected to your cable modem.
The second ethernet is connected by crossover to the linux box.

If this is right just right click on "network places"-"properties", then you have the different connections you're using. Identify the one that's connected to the cable modem and right click on it, select properties and go the "advanced" tab. Select "allow other user's connect to the internet throgh this PC's internet connection" (or something like that :D ). Now the last step is to select the "local network", that would be the second ethernet card that is connectes to the linux box. Click on accept and that's it.

k wheres "local network" located? and how do i configure slackware?

I don't have a xp box right here, but "select local network" (or sonsething like that) is at the same windows where you selected to "allow other user to connect.... bla, bla....." . It is a scroll menu that allow you to select what is the interface connected to your linux box.

Note that it is going to be there if and only if you already have both NICs installed.

When you enable internet sharing with xp that will turn your computer also on a DHCP server, so it's going to take the ip 192.168.0.1.

So, to configure your linux box just open a shell and type 'netconfig -d ethX' , where X is the number of your linux NIC (if you only have one NIC it is going to be "eth0")

k i havent configured both of my NICs, i think only one is configured.... how exactly would i do this? i dont want to screw up... but ill work on it till then.

When you go to "device manager" at windoze, how many adapters do you see at "network adapters"?. If you see both NIC's there then it's ok.

You don't have to do anything besides what I told you before.

Just before you enable the internet sharing, be sure that both NIC's have te option "obtain IP automatically" (that's inside each NIC properties)

ok i know for a fact one of the NIC's arent installed... ive been trying to detect the hardware, but with no avail. Exactly how do i install it? from there i think i got it.

If it's already inside of the computer then windoze must tell you that it found new hardware. If it's not working, try to change your NIC to another available PCI slot

I got a similar problem only somewhat backwards alright im connecting 2 computers using a parrellel(printer) port connection not to sure if this is going to work or not but in theory it shoud lol anyway if i do get them connected and set up my question is, is it possible for me to get the other computer online my online connection is connected ot my slack computer and the computer i wil be connecting by parrelel would be a windows 98 so do u think it would work if so how??? if not how do i set it up so i can send data between the 2 computers thanx in advance

Definitly the internet sharing wont work, because it uses IPs and a parallel port can't use an IP.

It would be better to get some UTP cable and make a crossover... that way is going to be easier and faster to share files and you're going to be able to share you internet too

idont got a utp how bout a serial conection?
