Windows Xp and slackware 9.0

I am using slackware 9.0 on my laptop which currently has windows 98 installed on the other partition. I am considering updating to windows XP but I realise there might be problems with the master boot record. I am using lilo and would like to know if this install is possible without reinstalling slack.

Couple things, I am under the impression that if I get this image done that it will overwrite the MBR. Correct me if I'm wrong pls.

I had the wild idea that I could get the image done, then simply use my boot disk and mount the root partition on the D drive(which is logical) then rerun the install scripts for lilo or run lilo -v and hope to God that it works.

The guys in the help desk said that the image only touches the C drive so im really counting on that as they told me to move anything important to the D drive. If anyone has had any experience with installing/upgrading/imaging windows after linux let me know if my above strategy could work.

Thanks alot.

Re-installing lilo after the XP installation is all you should have to do, except from possibly adjusting it a bit before. Just make sure you have something (for instance the Slackware CD) to boot Linux from before you've got lilo back in business, since XP will overwrite the MBR.

I would do like this...

1) Install XP. :P
2) Reboot into Linux using the Slackware CD.
3) If something in lilo.conf needs to be adjusted, edit it directly or run liloconfig.
4) Run lilo.

Done.
