I am using slack 10.0 with XFCE now. It works perfect, nothing goes wrong. I would try other window managers as well, so I installed blackbox,wmaker,fvwm2 and icewm yesterday.
I use xwmconfig to choose windows manager, nothing is changed (including settings) other than that, but Blackbox and wmaker stopped Xorg to continue its execution. (I have waited for 3-4 mins for each WM). The rest run perfectly on my box.
All packages are downloaded from current directory of slackware.com.
1) I installed the WM aforementioned using another tty (tty2) login as root
2) quit X if it is running
3) Run xwmconfig to change WM
4) Save settings and startx
