I don't know what Pat, Eric and other top Slackware contributors use as their primary desktops, I think Robby mainly uses XFCE though.

I have always used XFCE since I have been using Slackware (version 12.0). It is excellent and does everything I need.
The one KDE app I do use is K3B. The rest of KDE I don't need or want.

Yeah, I use k3b which is excellent and some of the KDE games as well when I'm running XFce.

[OT] has it stopped coastering everything yet (regardless of the same command run outside of k3b *not* doing so)?

Why the hell would the next release drop back to kde3?

The similarity between the KDE System Settings and Mac OS X's System Preferences is striking, if you ask me (see attached images). I suspect one project got the idea from the other, though I've no idea which got the idea first.

To be honest, I can't think of a reason the alphabetic system is better. At least this way, things which are in some way related are next to each other.

This is precisely why I use K3B. I have had bad burns with Gnomebaker, Brasero, Xfburn, and Graveman. Most of the time those apps work well though.
I have never had a bad burn with K3B. As much as I prefer XFCE or Gnome, I must admit that K3B is simply the best app for CD / DVD burning in linux.
I can use cdrecord and growisofs from the terminal. I always use cdrecord for burning iso images of linux install CDs for example. There are times, like when burning a data backup DVD for example, that K3B is much more convenient though.

This Xfce bug is actually my reason for switching to KDE:

I don't think so. KDE 4.3.4 in -current is simply beautiful. I love it.

I may be the only person in the world that feels this way, but I find OS X to be the ugliest most uninspired DE that I've ever seen. The drab brown ubuntu default is more exciting.

I do agree about the layout similarities, but if the similiarities continued I'd dump KDE yesterday.

For my part, I can't stand KDE 4.0. I have found that, on my machine,
XFCE is way more nimble. But then, I'm a programmer, and a command-line type of guy.
My favorite file manager is MC and I found
that apps like mplayer and qwenview did not launch well from MC in
KDE. With XFCE, it is like I have a far faster computer.

All the same:
I wish all the luck to the visionaries on the KDE development team.
It really does look great!
I'm just not likely to use it except when I have company. But I think
that KDE 4 will bring more users over from windows (I hope).

cheers
tim

Try 4.2 or 4.3. KDE 4.0 was not meant for general usage and was not included in Slackware for that reason.

That was a typo on my part. Sorry. I'm using 4.2.4 - that is - the stock install with slack 13.0
thanks
