wicd multiple user config

I just installed wicd 1.6.1 from slackware current and encountered the dbus security issue. Changed my wicd.conf and add myself to the netdev group. However, other users on my system cannot load wicd. I would like the other users to be able to view wicd (to see the signal strength), but not be able to change the settings.

Here is my current wicd.conf file:
Code:
<!-- /etc/dbus-1/system.d/wicd.conf -->
<!DOCTYPE busconfig PUBLIC "-//freedesktop//DTD D-BUS Bus Configuration 1.0//EN"
"http://www.freedesktop.org/standards/dbus/1.0/busconfig.dtd">
<busconfig>

        <policy user="root">
                <allow own="org.wicd.daemon"/>
                <allow send_destination="org.wicd.daemon"/>
                <allow send_interface="org.wicd.daemon"/>
                <allow send_destination="org.wicd.daemon.wireless"/>
                <allow send_interface="org.wicd.daemon.wireless"/>
                <allow send_destination="org.wicd.daemon.wired"/>
                <allow send_interface="org.wicd.daemon.wired"/>
                <allow send_destination="org.wicd.daemon.config"/>
                <allow send_interface="org.wicd.daemon.config"/>
        </policy>

        <policy at_console="true">
                <allow send_destination="org.wicd.daemon"/>
                <allow send_interface="org.wicd.daemon"/>
                <allow send_destination="org.wicd.daemon.wireless"/>
                <allow send_interface="org.wicd.daemon.wireless"/>
                <allow send_destination="org.wicd.daemon.wired"/>
                <allow send_interface="org.wicd.daemon.wired"/>
                <allow send_destination="org.wicd.daemon.config"/>
                <allow send_interface="org.wicd.daemon.config"/>
                <allow send_interface="org.freedesktop.DBus.Introspectable"/>
        </policy>

<policy context="default">
                <deny own="org.wicd.daemon"/>
        </policy>

        <!-- This Unix group will have permission to use Wicd's gui -->
        <policy group="netdev">
                <allow send_interface="org.freedesktop.DBus.Introspectable"/>
                <allow send_destination="org.wicd.daemon"/>
                <allow send_interface="org.wicd.daemon"/>
                <allow send_destination="org.wicd.daemon.wireless"/>
                <allow send_interface="org.wicd.daemon.wireless"/>
                <allow send_destination="org.wicd.daemon.wired"/>
                <allow send_interface="org.wicd.daemon.wired"/>
                <allow send_destination="org.wicd.daemon.config"/>
                <allow send_interface="org.wicd.daemon.config"/>
        </policy>

</busconfig>

Not possible at this point - it's all or nothing.
You might look into the wavelan plugin for Xfce (if you're using xfce) or something similar in another desktop.

Also consider filing a feature request bug against Wicd to perhaps make this possible with the 2.0 release.

I was hoping what would not be the answer . I am using kde4.

Is there anyway to make wicd view only for everyone? I only really use it to see the signal level in my task bar. I use wpa_gui for all my wireless needs and good ole ifconfig for wired. I am really starting to miss kwifi now.

I had another discussion with the lead wicd dev about this, and we reached the conclusion that it would take *much* hackery to the 1.6.x branch to even have a *chance* of doing this, and it would involve quite a few code changes to wicd itself. In short, not going to happen. However, this *is* something that we'd like to have in 2.0 (which is a good ways off still).

I've opened a bug for this so that it's not forgotten: https://bugs.launchpad.net/wicd/+bug/395411
