wicd keeps hanging up?

I know Reaper told me that wicd keeps hanging up and to use network manager instead. But is there a work around this problem (bug or whatever it is)?

i used wicd all the time and i never had this problem before
can you please show what steps you have taken to experience this problem?

well first install through pkgtool from extras (maybe an outdated version?)
then setup my wireless card info and all the password etc for connection.
Yea it connects... but it disconnects quite often as well. Usually when machine is idle for a few minutes. NetworkManager doesnt give me that problem on Centos at all.

...another thing that i noticed with wicd is that it does not see my printer adhoc connection. However NM does see it (but can't connect to it).

It's probably useful to mention which version of Slackware you're running. I've not had this problem on 13.37.

As well as the information willysr asked for.

13.37 could be due to wireless modem. i was using a ghetto ass overrated alfa.

I'm not using a wireless modem, just the Atheros NIC in my netbook.

I have no idea what this means.

Have you entered the correct WAP settings in your wicd-client setup? You should use wext as the driver. You can also enable debug mode and post the error log here.

the only issue I have ever had with WICD is when I forgot to disable all other network managers. In my experience, WICD is the best utility of its kind.

Dropped connections can be due to router issues and more.

As I've said before, I've had problems with wicd on two different boxes in two different locations. One time it will work, but the next time it might not. Most often it says there are no networks available, including the one in my line of sight less than 12 feet away. Using ifconfig, ifconfig up, ifconfig wlan0 or what have you, does not refresh the connection. The only thing that brings it back to life is to reboot the machine. Based on my experience I have to say NetworkManager is the far, far better of the two.

I confess---I was not speaking in a Slackware context---my experience is on other distros.

Yea, I just got back on this morning. So basically the only client i had on my slackware was wicd for wirless lan connection. no other connections. I was just wondering if wicd was reliable thats all, because I would not have the problem with Network Manager. The "ghetto ass Alfa" I was referring to: Alfa Awus036H (an overrated product that has problems on its own). But it works with Network Manager well so maybe its just wicd because some other members have said the same things about it.

Thanks man, if it wasn't for you they would think I am delusional. I have NM on my other distro never have that problem just as you stated. So I guess it is wicd since I am not the only 1 saying this.
