wicd issue in slackware?

OK so i got Slackware installed on the encrypted lvm. my problem now is that wicd (any version) will not pick-up hidden essid. so i tried the following:
iwconfig wlan0 essid mywireless
iwlist scan
am i missing something or is this a bug in the rt61 driver in 64 bit slackware 13? the above commands issued only to test if the wireless network was even available ( it is ).
the result was that non of my interfaces supported scanning.
lspci --nn has the card listed as a ralink RT2561 which has worked with 32bit versions of Slackware in the past.

any pointers?

Perhaps a silly question but do you have the firmware installed?
(rt61-firmware-1.2-fw-1 in the "n" package set)
The card worked fine for me when I was on slackware 13 64-bit and is still working now on current.
