wicd and wireless wiki woes

Oohh trying say that after a few beers.

Anyway, i've been reading alien bob's wiki on setting up networks, especially wireless networks. My question is, do I need to follow any of this if I install WICD? It seems to be doing the same job. I think that's why I was getting confused when i was trying to get wirelsss working in 12.2, I followed the wiki AND installed WICD and got my snall brain tangled up. Now i've installed 13, I was wondering if it's better to stick to one "method"?

Thanks in advance,

mute

It certainly is better to stick to one "method" :
- either make set-ups in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf as told by Eric
- or use wicd and let alone any setting in rc.wireless.conf (that is to say this file should remain virgo intacta)

Hi,

As was stated, choose one.

You should revert the '/etc/rc.inet1.conf' to the original state when using 'wicd'.

For Slackware 13.0 you should get the 'wicd 1.6.2.2' from -current to rid some of the problems with 'wicd 1.6.2.1'.

Cheers both,
can you explain to me what "You should revert the '/etc/rc.inet1.conf' to the original state when using 'wicd'." means? do i make a copy, install wicd, and then copy the original back?

Cheers again and thanks,

mute

Hi,

If you have modified the '/etc/rc.d/inet1.conf' then remove those mods or just copy the original. If you don't then conflicts with 'wicd' will surely occur.

Cheers fella! Think i'll make a copy of my rc.inet1.conf, install wicd, then copy it back. I hope I've understood correctly.
Thanks again,

thought it was a bad idea to mix -current and stable? Something to do with the new .txz files or something like that? Do i need to update all my packages to do with zipping/unzipping/extracting?

cheers,

Slackware 13 has its security updates in .txz so I think you'll be fine. 12.2 announcements are still in .tgz though.

Hi again,
After i figured out how to get to the link I tried installing the txz file using pkgtool. Nothing appeared to happen? I tried running wicd from the command line and got back a message saying there wasnt a module called wicd. Any ideas? I think i'm running 32bit and that was a 64 wicd I think. Could that be it? Should i be using something that pkgtool to install it? or since i'm using fluxbox do i need to install something else as well?

Cheers,

mute

you probably have the right file, but you weren't in the right folder, or didn't use hte right filename

you have to cd into the folder the wicd install file is in, and run installpkg *full pkg name*

i ran pkgtool from the folder that the wicd txz was in. Pkgtool even asked me if that file was the one I wanted to install. I also used the full name from the ncurses pkgtool menu as well (if you mean full as in "wicd-1.6.2.2-x86_64-1.txz"?).

thanks

Hi,

Once you have the 'wicd' installed and running to invoke from the 'cli' would be 'wicd-curses' to utilize the program.

Okay mate i'll try that thanks. I'm a little pessimistic though as the readme on that link starts with "After installing this package, make sure the /etc/rc.d/rc.wicd script is executable". Well, that script isn't in that folder.
I'll give it a go anyway and see what happens.

Thanks again,
mute
