% ln -s /usr/local/j2re1.4.1/plugin/i386/mozilla/javaplugin_oji.so \
~/mozilla-1.0/plugins/
DID THAT ALSO... but since i installed it to root i changed the /usr/local to root also.. and checked if there was a javaplugin_oji.so created and there was a link created i could tell by the little arrow on the icon...
the instructions have you a bit confused
when you ran the bin file it put the j2re folder in /usr/local
the plugin will be at /usr/local/j2re1.4.1/plugin/i386/mozilla/
oops sorry i think i have confused u... i have just copied those lines from the install readme file... actually i have downloaded it into my /root folder.. and extracted it into my /root folder so there is a /root/j2re1.4.1 directory with the j2re files and stuff... and i linked it from there... with the ln -s command... other than that i MUST install it into /usr/local.. i dont see a problem in wat i have done... any suggestions anybody?
hmm, that ought to work for at least root *if* you got the file named j2re-1.4.1-01-linux-i586-gcc3.2.bin. also it would help to have at least a pentium, with those binaries
however, i'd never put anything in /root that everyone would need to see, and if there's a symlink in /usr/lib/mozilla-1.3/plugins, then everyone who runs mozilla will be looking into /root/-something- !
yup i am running root in x.. in gnome... and i have installed java on mandrake and red hat like a thousand times.. it was not a big deal there... it was almost the same except with a rpm file... hmm.. i am so lost because i followed the instructions very carefully.... i installed the gcc 2.9 instead of the 3.2 b/c i for the 3.2 i might not have the dependencies and i thought i might go the safe way... other than that i have no clue wat i have done wrong.... i guess i can try to install it into the /usr/local folder just to try if that works... another question how would i "uninstall" the j2re on my computer? and how can i check if i have java on my browser?... i went into help and about plugins and there was no mime files... and i think it is using the libnull.so plugin... i am sooo confused about this java thing... any help?
thnx for the replies i got before, really appreciate it!
how would i find out which gcc build i need??? there are only two on the site gcc2.95 and gcc 3.2 and i have tried them both.. is this wat u were talking about?
it says i have 3.2.2 when i ran the command... but i dont get it i have installed the gcc3.2 version of the java j2re-1.4.1-01-linux-i586-gcc3.2.bin... is there a way i can check if i have installed it correct? i have done everything in the install readme file and linked it... it shows in the usr/lib/mozilla-1.3/pulgins folder.. it has the link file of the javaplugin_oji.so... but i dont have java still =(
okay i figured out my stupidity.. well here it goes... i installed java 1.4.1 on my mozilla 1.3 apparently the versions have to match so i needed the java 1.3 or i could have installed the newest mozilla 1.4.1 and installed the java 1.4.1 ... how stupid huh? thnx for ALL the replies... really appreaciate it!
hey, i found out how to get bwbar to dynamically link to libpng... you have to add "-lz -lm" to the linker options (previously only "-lpng") in the Makefile that comes with it, so you can type "make" instead of gcc --(lots of options) bwbar.c
this instantly solves the failed dependencies in Slack 9 that were no problem in Slack 8.1
I have to agree with you all. I'm running Slack 8.1 on my server.
My List of Complaints:
1. The 2nd time I installed, Lilo didn't get written correctly.
2. GCC 3 can't seem to compile anything correctly.
3. None of the old packages work. I have made like 50 of them!!
This is from my personal experience, yours may differ. For what my server does (Apache, PHP, mySQL, UltimateIRCD & Anope, SSHD), Slack 8.1 works great.
I've been using Slackware 9 for about a month now (I came from using SuSE 8.1) and only once did the system go completely FUBAR. I did a rpm2tgz of transgaming's Kohan port since I can't remember how to get back to the original download page to get the tarballs and installed the tgz. I don't remember changing anything else and when I rebooted the computer the ICEauthority for the user kept changing to root as the owner an group and kept locking me out. Also I lost read permissions to /usr/bin for users which kept resetting itself every reboot. I figured the quick fix would be to reinstall. Beyond that nothing else has gone wrong with Slack 9. I just don't like rpm2tgz from now on.
I'd take Slackware over any distribution anyday.
