I had the same problem with slackware 8.1 and the alsa 5 series drivers. (ac97 also, fluxbox for wm) i first loaded everything via /etc/modules.conf. That would work but die out every couple hours. Then i loaded the snd-via* module via /etc/rc.cmodules. And that worked.

Now in slack 9 with the 9 series alsa i have everything loaded by /etc/modules.conf and using gnome2 and everything is fine.

What alsa version are you using???

Your mixer defaults muted, IIRC. So you have to set it to unmuted, and at a certain volume; then you also must place "alsactl restore" in /etc/rc.d/rc.local so that on each subsequent reboot your volume is restored. Here's a thread where Excalibur (The resident Slackware Guru) helped me out:

regarding a similar issue. It might apply to your situation and help fix the problem

Cool
