First of all just to let everyone know... I have been in and out of slackware... but yet at the same time I never got into it so therefor I am a newbie...Also I have been told that I should start with a more user friendly Linux Distro...Only problem is about 4 years ago when I found out about linux the first distro I came across was Slackware and at that time I had no clue how to partition harddrives or any of that and learned it through trial and error...so the little that I know about Linux is all because of slackware itself....That means I have a connection with it that wont end...lol so to speak... meaning I wont change to another distro just because it is easier..... I have installed Slack 12 onto my system and also I have Windows Vista Ultimate... I would like to know what my first tweaks and fixes should be.... I ran across two problems first one is I tried to get my cdrom which is a(Philips DVD+- RW DVD8881 SCSI CdRom) to mount when I put in a DVD disk that I have burnt wallpapers and packages on to I did not format the disk... yet at the same time it wont mount... also I have a Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter WMP54G when I try to auto detect my wireless card it says that it cant find one... but when I open the device and hardware viewer in KDE it shows that I have the Broadcom eth0 and that I have the Linksys Wireless PCI Adapter....I am not connecting to my own internet service I am piggybacking off others in my apartment complex that are not secure....How would I set it up so that I am able to connect to any of the wireless routers in my apartment complex like I do in windows vista? For the time being I will keep reading up off of the forums that I have bookmarked write all the material and commands on paper then boot up slack...until I get all the bugs worked out... O and I it advisable to add Gnome to the Slack12 I noticed that it wasnt in this latest distro.. Thank You very much... any and all information will be appreciated... I will continue to try and find a solution to these problems... I am runing Slackware 12 on a Dell Dimension E521 it is an ACPIx86-based PC My HD is a ST316081 2AS SCSI AMD Athlon9tm0 64 Processor 3500+ 2.20 GHz Ram is 894 MB as a display adapter it has the NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE...

First thing, the bold font is a little hard on the eyes.

That's not a good idea seeing as it can open your computer up to insecurities and it can be illegal without permission.

Are you saying that that particular disc won't mount even with the "mount" command or that it won't automount?

The most mature and stable Gnome for Slackware at the moment is Dropline Gnome. Gnome-Slacky from the Italian Slackware Community at slacky.eu is a newcomer but seems to be quite active.

I would at your convenience read the sticky posted at the top of the forum regarding HAL. For automounting to occur fire up your favourite text editor and edit /etc/group

For example

#nano /etc/group

Add your regular user to cdrom, audio, video, plugdev, wheel and any other groups you want.

To save: Ctrl+o
To exit: Ctrl+x

Thats funny you should say that... I had asked what the laws were here in Texas... to see if me conecting to others wireless net was ilegal... I was told as long as It wasnt secure I could not get into any trouble....the only time that I could get in trouble was if it was password protected and I some how came up with the password... along the lines of brute forceing it I suppose...

Yeah, it's there fault if they leave their network unsecured anyway

Have you tried networkmanager for easily changing between networks?

That is the message I got....

I believe the answer to our common problem can be found in this thread. Basically, you need to add your user to the "cdrom" and "plugdev" groups, then restart the dbus daemon (restart your computer, basically.)
