Why is Slackware so popular ?
Sorry, but I was just wondering. There are usually 50+ people here. Is there a reason for this, or is Slackware just a popular Linux distribution.

I believe this is the official slackware forum (or something to that effect).

Have you tried Slackware?
Because if you have, you will understand.

this is the main, most crowded, most supported, most kind, Slackware forum on this Earth
and Slackware rocks, of course
PS: what kind of answer did you expect by asking that in such a slacker place?

Why is Slackware popular? 3 words... minimal, dependable, stable. I've tried about 8 different distros. I started with RedHat, then Mandrake, then Slackware, then a few others. I have never strayed far from Slack once I tried it. From install to use, it's the best platform I've ever had for my computing needs.
Slackware is very well documented, heavily supported, and known for its rock hard stability. It doesn't have the bloat that most other distros have, and unlike Fedora and the like, Slackware doesn't modify schemes to yuckify (I mean 'beautify') their distro. You usually see the product exactly the way that the author intended.
I'd choose Slackware over any other distro any day of the week, however, it does have a steeper learning curve than other distros. While Fedora and RedHat do everything for you, you have to do most of your configuration by hand with Slackware, however, the result is a lean and readily capable distro that you taylor specifically for your system.

I have no idea why slackware is so popular it really is nothing special, but after you use it you just get hooked (slackware user for over 4 years)
I just wish pat would open up a forum for slackware.

So, what do you think this is, then?
By the way, slackware.com did use to run a forum, years ago, but Pat closed it due to abuse. Now he points everyone to this forum here.

You would think after DCaplinger put forth the general opinion of most Slackware users, you would get that Slackware is indeed different than most other distros, but perhaps that is asking for too much.

As Mr. Strickland said:
You've got a real attitude problem! You're a slacker! You remind me of your father when he went here. He was a slacker, too.
So I guess it just get's passed down...

3 words... minimal, dependable, stable
that puts it all in one easy read. I have Slack installed on my server. Striped down just CMD line and a few apps and i have never had to shut it off, been up and running for 2 years now Rock Solid. And it makes one heck of a nice desktop distro for me on my computers too. with the advanced power managment running on my lappy i get almost double the life out of my laptop. Just an outstanding Distro and i hope it never stops. Pat does one heck of a job on it. I look forward to ever release.

Slackware and XFCE like two peas in a pod.
Slackware is lean mean and likes older machines.
Perfect for some PIII's I have laying around.

I still run several PIIs which thrive on Slackware current with 2.6 kernel.
Take old PC, Slackware and just add RAM

Slackware is kinda harsh on newbies ( Me looks in the mirror )but the reason i stuck with it is because it gives me a sense of accomplishment everytime i overcome an obstacle and learn somethin new. Other distros are nice, my first distro was redhat 6.2 and it was nice but i get the feeling that im not in control and not learning anything since im being guided step by step through most things. To back up the solid distro slackware already is we have a wonderfull community of helpfull people and you feel welcomed right away.
