If you're compiling 3.4.4, do note that it installs new firmware upon 'make modules_install'; check the ChangeLog. If you don't want to overwrite the package-installed firmwares in /lib/firmware, do 'make modules_install INSTALL_FW_PATH=/path/to/alt/firmware/dir'.

The best thing to do when compiling a new kernel is follow this guidebook:
http://alien.slackbook.org/dokuwiki/...kernelbuilding You can often get away with AlienBOB's guide if you follow it EXACTLY to the tee. There is one instance you may want to do which is before compiling, you load the kernel configuration utility like kconfig, gconfig, or xconfig while in X to see if any errors pop up when loading a previous kernel configuration made by Patrick so they can be found and fixed before you compile. |
I believe Pat decided to continue with kernel 4.2.X on Slackware 14 (4.2.21) because that version is lts. Targeting on stability it would be a very good choise

 When did we get the Kernel 4.x series?
