Why does X not open windows?

I have been stumped by a problem for a while now. Every 7-10 days I have to restart X windows. When I try to open apps I see them trying to load and then they stop. I'm currently running KDE (version that came with 10.2), but I had the same problem under Gnome.

If I try to login as a regular user, login hangs when it reaches the window manager. In order to get X to work properly again, I have to login as root and log back out. After that everything works fine for another 7-10 days.

Any ideas? I will provide whatever details needed for this to make sense. TIA!!

Perhaps there's a memory leak in something running constantly?

unmount your network share and see if the problem goes away.
