Yep, thanks, that fixed it! I previously had both repository priorities on 'Default'.

So how does slapt-get choose among the alternatives?

If at least one of them is installed the dependency is fulfilled. If none of them is installed, then it installs the first one in the list that is available.

I just finished setting up my first Slackware system since over 10 years. I only did a minimal expert install but it was fairly easy. Getting my wireless (wpa2 aes psk) to work was also surprisingly simple. It took about 7 minutes in total to get the wireless to be functional. Usually it takes me about 30 minutes with other distros to figure out "their way of doing things".

I'm used to Arch but the dependencies weren't really an issue even when I didn't install most of the libs (in contrast to those who usually do a full install). At first I was having some problems with missing shared libraries, then I figured out how to use 'slackpkg file-search' to add what was needed. After figuring that out this really seems easy to me.

I still haven't decided whether I am going to just pull in the binaries for xorg-server or compile it myself along with everything beyond (such as my WM) in order to keep maximum control...either way I'm already feeling pretty confident that problems will be minimal.
