Whole systems hangs when using the internet...
Hello, After switching to slackware I came across this annoying problem. I did the install with the default vmliuz kernel. Whenever I use the internet, for example Mozilla the WHOLE system will stop untill it is has finished loading the page. (by that I mean cant do anything untill it has finished loading). This is really starting to anoy me. Could someone please reply with an answer to this that will solve it?
Thanks,
Nathan.

Perhaps a little more information from you might help someone find an answer for you:
What are your system specs?
Which slackware version did you install?
Which mozilla version are you using?
What is the first page you are visiting when you launch mozilla? Does it have flash, java, etc?

Ok Lets see,
AMD Athlon 1.50MHZ
256MB ram
nforce motherboard.
Slackware 9.1.
Knowing the mozilla version is irrelavent as it lags when using all internet applications such as sigining in on Gaim etc. But one thing I did find interesting when using wget it dosent lag at all. I was thinking that it is the kernel as it did the same thing in mandrake, but not in gentoo which uses a different kernel. Im using 2.4.22 now.

Do you get the same problem with another web browser (Netscape, Opera, Galeon, Dillo)...?
For instance, try compiling and installing Dillo on your machine. This is quick and painless. Then, run Mozilla on one page. Then, try Dillo.

DNS Is set to the router? As in it queries the router first, and then continues out to the ISP router?? That might cause the pause until information is flowing.
Do you have a firewall up?
The other thing might be the nforce board itself (I am assuming that you are using the onboard NIC?). I've been helping a friend with Suse and his nforce board. What I have been finding is that the NIC (nforce2) seems not to play well with others (specifically what I don't know). The drivers for the NIC -- were they the install default or did you go and download the latest from the manufacturer?

Yes, it lags on everything except when I recieving files (I used wget fine) Ill just compile a new kernel see if that helps at all. Then if that dosent work ill just switch back to gentoo...

I agree with one of the responses about pointing to the router. You would be better to point to your ISP, which does not change anyway, or setting up simple caching DNS on your own machine.
If you want to try having fun with option two, start with this howto... HOWTO become a totally small time DNS admin.

Had same problem - fixed
This is a common problem with the nForce NIC, due to it being in cpu throughput mode automatically. Try using an older network driver, i.e. the NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0256.tar.gz one - you can just compile the nvnet driver by unpacking and building in the nforce/nvnet directory (just do 'make' then 'make install' but remove the one you're using now 1st),
Or you can pass an option in modules.conf to turn off cpu throughput, I think the line: 'option nvnet optimization=1' may need to be added, but I can't remember what exactly you need to put so don't actually use that in your modules.conf as if its not right your machine won't boot - search google and I'm sure there will be something more.
I just use the older driver personally, works great and all you need to do is build and install it.
