iptables

Should be installed by default, unless you chose not to install it.

iptables is a system that needs expert configuration to be used properly.

I started a post at http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=530208 that may help.

There are several applications listed there that will help in configuring iptables, there's also some useful posts on manual configuration.

Just one more question...

If I have 2 network cards. One built in on the moderboard and one on a pci slot. How do I configure them, and how to know there correct "eth1" or likely...

Does I have to do a netconfig separatly on both cards? And how do i write the syntax "netconfig eth1"

/c

You need to make sure each card is configured for a different subnet, and of course make sure that each one is physically connected to a different network segment. You would enable ipforwarding in your firewall config to pass traffic between subnets.

As far as knowing which card is eth0 or eth1,etc, there are a number of ways. Do you know the manufacturer of each one? If so, there are a few ways to find out.

But a quick easy way, if you don't know the manufacturer, is to just plug a cat 5 cable that has an active connection on the other end into only 1 of the cards and do either

Code:
ethtool eth0
or
ethtool eth1
and see which one says "Link detected: yes."

You will probably need to be root to run the ethtool command.

If you want to be lazy download and install shorewall.
That will let you manage IPTABLES "easily".
