It's because, by default, modesetting was introduced into the kernel to load drivers dynamically using the drm and auto-loaded kernel module rather than the standard xorg configuration method.

I just finished with a bumblebee install for Nvidia Optimus on a Dell XPS. Nice work by jgeboski for the Bumblebee.Slackbuild which was updated 5 days ago; Previous build was six months old and would not work on this XPS. The README is very helpful so a user should follow this to the 'T'.

One thing is to be sure to use: http://slackware.mirrors.tds.net/pub...eau-blacklist/ or manually blacklist nouveau. Be sure to restart your 'X' session.

NASA picture of the day looks beautiful in firefox using 'optirun firefox'. I have been running 'optirun firefox' since the install on Slackware 14.0 Rc5. Fan does run and temps remain stable.

LOL. As the maintainer of libvdpau on Slackbuilds.org I never thought to look there for the nvidia blob/flash accelleration problem. Just saw you post. I don't recall getting an email! TEAMWORK! We need better Teamwork!!!!

So how do you guys handle the h.264 codec issue in firefox?

I support Mozilla's and Opera's stance on this issue. If it doesn't come with a webm version then I simply don't watch it!

Was always using the blob, but have an old NV20 card needing the 96.x driver, that predictably doesn't work with Xorg anymore. Switched to nouveau, which has an apparent conflict on NV20 cards and KDE causing app crashes, an apparently known and unresolvable issue with KDE, and the latest Xorg and nouveau.

KDe maintainers suggested I switch to the blob, which of course I can no longer do. In fact I borked up slackware's X enough that I am now posting from Ubuntu (the shame, the horror, no not really). But I see there is a new 96.x update at last so I'll give that a whirl. Or I guess I can buy a new card...

I support their stance as well. Nonetheless there might be some workaround, just to allow people to watch youtube in firefox without using the flash plugin (which is pure sh*t at the best of times, on every platform, but particularly on linux).

That is no surprise. This ancient chip (11 years old) doesn't work with recent Windows versions either. Driver support ends in early 2006. Most other GPU manufacturers from this age are defunct.

Even if no working drivers are available anymore, VESA framebuffer still works.

When I first installed 13.37, I was using the integrated graphics (nvidia 6150), and nouveau didn't work. When I fitted a nvidia gts 450 a few months ago, I didn't bother testing nouveau. But now I've installed Slack64 14.0, I find that nouveau works OK. Touch wood, fingers crossed, etc.

Proprietary, because nouveau can't control the speed of my GTS250's fan. Before the nVidia driver loads, it's always running at 100% (which sounds like a hair dryer set to maximum blow).

Which at least doesn't blow up your GPU. My card is set at 65 % at boot, which is good enough for displaying text-mode screens, but insufficient for real 3D loads. So a driver without working fan control overheats the GPU. Therefore I have to use the BLOB to avoid hardware damage.

FYI, the "smurf effect" on youtube is fixed with the release of libvdpau-0.5.
