Okay, I downloaded Slackware 8.1 and put it on a cd. I'm having trouble finding the right boot disk. Bare.i starts up, but then it says boot failed. I've tried this several times from different parts of the world. I tried some others too, but was wondering if there is one in particular I should try. I'm using a Dell 4100 Dimensions. I think my hard drive is ide, is there a command to find out for sure? I tried scsi.s but that disk didn't work either. I've been using the dd utility to create the disks. This worked fine when I created them under RedHat. If anyone has any ideas, I'd welcome them. Thanks.
Just boot from the CD. At the very beginning just hit return to use the default image. Then towards the end when it says which image again go with default vmlinuz.
Really? A Dell 4100 should support booting from CDROM. When you reboot hit "delete" or one of the F# keys to go into BIOS setup. Change your boot order in the bios so that it trys to boot from CDROM before HD.
And when I turn it on, the dell screen is on for longer than usual, and then after about 15 seconds, Redhat starts booting from my harddrive. I've got the Slackware 8.1 install image on a cd in the cdrom.
Okay, I found a boot image that works. Now I have a problem with the root disks. The first one goes through fine, but the second one comes up repeating an i/o error. I've tried downloading different install.2 disks, but I keep running into the same problem. Am I doing something wrong here? I've been trying to install 8.1 - should I go with the current beta version instead?

WHERE did you find the image that works? I have a Dimension 4100 as well, and I can't seem to get Slack8.1 to boot from cd :/
You have to make the boot disk and the five root disks. The images can be downloaded from the same place you got the iso image. I have a 4100 too, but couldn't boot after adjusting the bios. I can bootup with a Gentoo cd though. It's kind of strange.
I don't have cd-rw. I'd put it in, setup the bios so only the cd-rom would boot. It would start reading it and then tell me to enter a boot disk. I installed gentoo from a cd without any problems. It's kind of strange, but I've reinstalled Slack a few times, so I still have the boot disk and the root disks hanging around.
