where proper place to input changes

I have a computer, setup and running by another person, but now I would like to change a few things such as computer name, IP address, DNS, gateway, workgroup, and maybe settings related to telnet & ftp if there are some that need to be changed.
I have determined where some of these things show up in various files, but am concerned that perhaps editing the individual files may not be the proper procedure. I am thinking that there may be a 'proper' input mechanism whereby the new info is loaded into all the appropriate places (for example, maybe I've stumbled on to one place where IP is found, but maybe the system really has and needs it in four places).

Where can & should I make these types of inputs?

Slackware 7.0 & kernel(?) 2.2.16 & yes, I know it is old, but I am just learning Linux & will upgrade when I hopefully learn enough not to kill a working system.

Thanks,
JesseMor

netconfig would be a good place to start. You have to be logged in as root to run it though. There's probably a better way, but that's worked for me.
