The correct dir for decompression would be /usr/src as you downloaded the source, not a package. Follow loservegs advice to get an easily installable package.

i dont remember when i installed slapt-get if i had to do this, but i know there is a "repository list" config file for slapt-get, maybe check to see if you need to choose a repository first
slackpckg is shipped with slack, tehre you need to choose a repository, hope that wil be needed here. like choose slack11 or current, tht depend on the repository http://rkrishna.tp.googlepages.com/slackerbasics#upda
