Wow! You've got a lot of cores there!

cwizardone 07-05-2020 10:14 AM

Virtual cores are also counted.
:)

OK, that's built and installed. I'd forgotten how long it takes to build a full stock kernel with all the drivers! Hours!

We'll see how it boots tomorrow. But I'm less sure now that those two changes will do the trick. I checked the configuration of the old kernel (4.4.199) and that didn't have those two options set either, but it still showed my four penguins, while the series 5 one doesn't.

If it doesn't work, I'll throw in the towel. It's too trivial a problem to waste all this energy on.

Put
Code:

vga = ask
in your lilo.conf.

When you next boot, the available screen resolutions & depths for your particular hardware will be listed. With each will be its mode number. After a few reboots, when you have discovered the mode that works best for you, write down its mode number and then edit your lilo.conf again, this time with vga=<your desired mode number>

No idea if this affects penguin-ness or not.

p.s. as already mentioned in this thread, the kernel will probably change the graphic mode to what it wants in a few seconds.

Using the lilo.conf as show in post #42, above, this what I see every time the machine boots up

Ah! I get it now! When I install LILO, I typically select the “vga = normal” option. These days, I use a home-built GRUB copy as my bootloader, with a minimalistic hand-written configuration file that does nothing to select any graphics mode.

That's because young ones don't remember the story of Taro and Jiro...

No, this is the time of year when all the penguins that can leave Antarctica, have done so. The only ones still there are the male emperors, guarding their next generation.

Still no penguins and that's with the new kernel. I give up! It's not all that important anyway. Slide down my back, as my mother used to say.

All my machines always show one per core.. I'm actually kind of curious what would happen if somebody tried it on a 3950x lol. I might find out on my next upgrade to whatever zen 3's analogue to that is.

IIRC someone said on another thread that they would fill that line on top of the screen until they disappear.
I think this makes sense since the screen would be filled with Tuxes :D (is the plural right?).
Would be nice to see a picture of a boot with that Ryzen and two monitors to see if they propagate :D

But does it count all cores? Or show them, rather.
Gotta admit I go by my (poor) memory here, but I seem to remember it stops showing penguins at some point?
If you have enough of them I mean.
Computers (even desktop computers) these days can have 16+ cores (plus threads).
32 penguins? Even 64 and 128 cores isn't unheard of these days (granted, you're typically talking fairly expensive server hardware, but still)... that would be a whole lot of penguins :-D (Now I'm looking for a tux icon ;-) )

Oh, right, somehow I overlooked this post before posting myself.

As for two (or more) monitors; The system only shows the same on all monitors connected during boot.
On my system it initially shows it on two monitors, later in the boot (after graphics mode has been set) it comes up on all monitors (four in my case). Otherwise an interesting idea... "Hmmm, I got more system cores, now I also have to get another monitor."
Maybe an excuse to get those 49" ultra wide curved monitors?
:Pengy::Pengy::Pengy::Pengy::Pengy::Pengy::Pengy::Pengy:

:-D

Thanks, I didn't know that, never plugged more than one monitor :)
