Post where does make bzImage get the config from

Hello,

I know this has been answered somewhere before but I can not find the thread. When you type make bzImage from the usr/src/linux directory what config files is it using.

I have a number of PC's to maintain so I have a script that recompiles the kernel, updates lilo and everything.

I also have a config file I have saved from after I altered the kernel. I want to be able to zip this file with encyption, have the script connect via NFS unzip it and build the new kernel from this config file.

Can I pass make bzImage the config file ?

Michael

As a precaution, I always run a make menuconfig, or make oldconfig after copying over the config file...just to make sure the config is detected. Then as long as the .config file is in the source tree, the kernel will be compiled accordingly. Just a thought...

Edit: You do still plan to do a make dep/make clean right?

Hello,

I still plan to do a make dep and make clean I just was not sure where to put the config file. I now know that I can copy the config file to .config and build the kernel that way with out having to run make menuconfig

Thanks
Michael

you might want to look into adding the config module to your default kernel. it's under filesystems in the config and when it's loaded it creates a /proc/config block which you can cat whenever you want to spit out the configuration of the kernel, so you don't need to keep a seperate config file lying around.
