Where can I get emerge? I tried searching, the name is popular but can't find. Is it only for certain distributions? Can I get it and will it work on Slackware?
Actually, it isn't that hard to build and use portage on Slackware. There are quite a few posts about doing it at the Gentoo forums. The problem is, eventually your system turns into a bastard. You'll soon find slack packages stop working, and you can't use emerge to build packages without errors.
Emerge is a very nice feature. But I've found that reading doc's, checking my dependencies and using
Code:
./configure --prefix=/usr/local && make <options> && checkinstall >& compile<pkg-name>.log &
there is a port called emerde and I dislike it At first it was sweet then after a few weeks it stopped working. I would rsync with a slackware source server and Slackbuild the packages.
Hmm. To my knowledge this is just *one* of a number of projects. Maybe
- it has improved in the meantime
- other options are better.
I don't know. My only experience is with the build system of ROCK Linux --- which can run on Slackware for native and cross builds. It's a number of Bash scripts.
But, as someone said: With any of these systems you run into the risc to confuse Slackware's own (very basic) package management system.
But you are a Slacker because you are bold and responsible and because you know what you are doing, how and why, and you really want it that way, right? ;-)
If you MUST have portage, either try Gentoo (ick), or google for portpkg (i forget the link at present). i had a look at it, and i must say it looked promising, but i'm happy with my self made slackpackages thanks.
On a different note, Does anyone know off hand how large the basic slack-current ftp site is (inluding source)? I'm considering making a local mirror for my boxen.
